About this pattern

Polypodium is the common polypody, an evergreen fern that stays green all winter on rocks, walls and old trunks, often rimed with frost.

The hat is a fitted beanie knitted in the round from the ruffle up, with a deep folded cuff in twisted rib. At the crown the frost is decreased away first and the ferns run on to the top, where they meet in a star.

The long scarf is worked flat in two halves, from each end towards the middle, and grafted together, so the ferns grow upwards at both ends when it hangs. Each end has a ruffle, a twisted rib band and a row of curled fiddleheads, and an eye cable with nupps runs along both long edges.

What's inside

  • 2 PDFs, in English and in Polish, each with the hat in three sizes and the scarf (13 pages)
  • Lace and cable charts for the hat and the scarf, and a crown decrease table
  • Step-by-step hat (ruffle, folded cuff, body, crown) and scarf (two halves grafted in a plain band at the back of the neck)
  • Techniques explained: picot cast-on, nupps, twisted cables, turning the cuff, Kitchener stitch step by step, lifelines
  • A schematic and a yarn estimate for each piece
  • The row-by-row companion: every round of the hat and every row of the scarf highlighted on the chart and spelled out in English or Polish (unlock code inside the PDF)

Sizes

The hat is meant to fit closely: it is 4–14% smaller than the head it is made for (negative ease), so the lace opens a little when you wear it. Between two sizes? Choose the smaller one for a snug hat, the bigger one for a softer fit. The scarf measures 24.7 × 190 cm after blocking and takes about 790 m; the whole set fits in three skeins of 100 g.

Questions

What does beta mean?

Polypodium has been checked stitch by stitch in software (every chart row, every written round, the crown decreases and the cables), but no sample set has been knitted yet. Knit the swatch first. If anything doesn't add up, write to [email protected]. When the tested version is ready, Payhip sends it to you for free.

Is there help while I knit?

Yes. The row-by-row companion shows every row of your size on the chart and spells it out in English or Polish. You unlock it with the code printed in the PDF.

Is this a finished hat and scarf?

No. This is a digital PDF pattern for you to knit yourself. Nothing is posted to you.

How do I get the pattern?

Right after payment you can download the PDFs, and Payhip also emails you a download link. The email comes from Payhip, so check your spam folder if you don't see it.

Can I get a refund?

The pattern is delivered instantly, so the right of withdrawal ends once the download is available. If a file is faulty or doesn't match its description, we will send a corrected file or refund you. See the terms of sale.

Can I sell what I make?

Yes, you can sell hats and scarves you knit by hand from this pattern. Please don't share or resell the PDF itself.
