Hortulus
A little garden to wear: fingerless mitts with a beetle whose whole body is a lilac flower, and an ear warmer tied in a bow under the chin, with a rabbit sitting over each ear. Both are knitted in two-colour stranded colourwork and share a border of lilac florets.

About this pattern
Hortulus is Latin for "little garden". It is the title of a poem written around 840 by Walahfrid, a monk on the island of Reichenau, about the plants of his monastery garden.
The mitts are knitted in the round from a two-colour rib, with a thumb gusset on the palm side. The beetle sits on the back of the hand and tiny florets cover the palm. The pattern has you try the cuff on before the colourwork and the mitt before the top rib.
The ear warmer is a flat tube, so it is double and the floats stay hidden inside. You knit two halves from the i-cord ties up, set the length over the head so the rabbits sit over your ears, and graft the halves together at the top.

Sizes
Choose the mitts by comparing your hand with the mitt circumference: colourwork hardly stretches, so the mitt is close to the size of your hand, and the pattern has you try it on as you go. The ear warmer is one size, about 10 cm wide over the ears and 15 cm on top; its length can be set from 48.5 to 57.5 cm so the rabbits sit over your ears. It takes about 190 m of the main colour and 85 m of the contrast.

Questions
What does beta mean?
Hortulus has been checked stitch by stitch in software (every chart, every stitch count, every increase and the length of every float), but no sample has been knitted yet.
